Edna Maria Shoemate, of Freeport, passed away Sunday, June 11th, at the age of 89. She was born September 11, 1927 to James and Rozalia Istook. Edna married the love of her life, the late Elbert Shoemate, on June 6, 1949, the day she graduated from college at Texas Women's University with a Bachelor's in Library Sciences. Edna and Elbert were together for 67 years, until his passing in 2016.

Edna worked as a librarian before raising her 5 children while following her husband to duty stations across the country and overseas with the United States Air Force.

Edna was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was present for all weddings, births, pageants, recitals and band concerts; and she always had iced tea and homemade cookies ready for visitors and grandchildren. She and her husband were active members of the local Elks Lodge. She and Elbert traveled far and wide, making new friends and maintaining ties with many relatives across the world. Edna's family remembers her as a kind soul without a mean bone in her body. She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to her last breathe.

Edna is survived by her daughter Kathy (Charles) Seidler, and sons Roger (Barbara) Shoemate, Stephen Shoemate, and Charles (Yan) Shoemate. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Michael (Emily) Henley, William (Melissa) Henley, Patrick Shoemate, Christina (Garrett) Buchanan, Dorothy (Corey) Crawford, Anna (Robert) Prochazka, Sarah (Jason) Butler, and Allen Shoemate; and nine great-grandchildren: Zoe, Desiree, Phoenix, Jadyn, Brenna, Ezekiel, Hayden, Davrick, and Benjamin. Her namesake, Vera Eden, is due this November. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Rozalia Istook; her brother, Ernest Istook; and her youngest son, Elbert Patrick Shoemate.

Funeral Services, Saturday, June 17th 10:00 AM at Restwood Funeral Home with burial to follow at Restwood Memorial Park.
