America has lost another member of the greatest generation. James T. Smith was born July 12, 1925 and died July 3, 2016 at the age of 90. He is now in heaven with his Lord and reunited with his wife Helen. He was raised in the Great Depression and like so many of his generation, joined the armed forces to fight for his country. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served in the pacific theater throughout the war. After the war, he enrolled in Western Kentucky University and graduated with a double major in chemistry and mathematics. He met and married the love of his life, Helen, in eastern Kentucky and moved his family to The Valley in 1953. He began teaching in the Mission school district and continued his education. He received his Master's degree in mathematics and continued teaching in Mission, becoming the head of the math department. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting and astronomy but his real passion was reading. Reading two to three books a week. He served as a deacon and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Mission where he also taught adult Sunday school for over 25 years. He is survived by his son and daughter, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Grave side services to be held at Valley Memorial Gardens at 10:00 am on July 6th and a memorial service at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Mission.
